What is Informed Consent?

In this blog post I am giving away a sneak peek to my Online Childbirth Class coming this spring! I am so excited to share this course with the world!

Today we are talking about what is informed consent?

It is “permission granted in the knowledge of the possible consequences, typically that which is given by a patient to a doctor for treatment with full knowledge of the possible risks and benefits.”

The American Medical Association had this to say about informed consent: It “is fundamental in both ethics and law. Patients have the right to receive information and ask questions about recommended treatments so that they can make well-considered decisions about care. Successful communication in the patient-physician relationship fosters trust and supports shared decision making.”

Remember, It is not your job to ask your care provider’s permission, it is your care provider’s job to ask your permission. And if their recommendation is truly what is best for your care, then it should be easy for them to provide pros and cons for making that choice.

Another way to look at it is if an individual is coerced, pressured, or made to be afraid of the choice itself-that is not informed consent.

I created a helpful graphic below that I am also giving away for free! It helps lay out the steps for getting informed consent.

As an added bonus I am including my video for this topic! I pulled this video directly from my online course. It’s a fun way to see an example of what one of my educational videos on my online class might look like.

I hope you guys found this helpful! Please share with your friends due this spring and summer about the upcoming childbirth class!
