Who We Are Called To Be

In my work as a doula I am saying affirmations a lot!

“You can do this!”

“You are strong!”

“It’s just 30 more seconds, you can do anything for 30 seconds.”

It’s hard to pick a favorite part of my job. I love it all! But how much positivity pours from my fingers on a keyboard and from my mouth into ears that need it most is very high on the list. So many times I will be having a rough day until I get in work mode and then my attitude is turned around.

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

Proverbs 17:22

I wonder sometimes if maybe the whole world would be a better place if positivity was a part of every job description. If we were encouraged to build our coworkers up as well as work on our bottom line. What if raises and bonuses were based on our ability to work as a team and give our coworkers chances to shine.

What if we gave kids grades on being better humans over grades for math and science. What if when they applied to college what kind of person they were was the bigger deciding factor over english papers. After all we can all learn to study harder, to excel more, to be the best. But being a kind and positive person is sometimes a bigger battle than many of us lose.

What would our world look like if every area of our life was peppered with more positivity? What if we had goals to be kind as well as get the laundry done and mow the lawn.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Romans 12:2
“You can do this!”

I love to go to the gym. It has free childcare so some time to listen to my music and not be pestered is a big factor as to why I enjoy going. But I do like challenging myself. I like running. But I am not very strong or very fast. I get stitches and I want to slow down. Ever since becoming a doula whenever I want to quit I hear my own voice in my head saying, “Come one your almost done with this rep! You can do it! Your strong!”

“May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. “

Psalm 19:14

I never thought that I would be my own guardian angel. After all Self talk hasn’t always been so positive. I spent more years of my life than not saying horrible things to myself. I drove myself into emotional corners that I could not manage to get out of.

I spoke to a counselor recently and she asked me to describe myself, not what I say to myself but who I am. When I did she said, “do you notice that the negative things you say to yourself are in direct conflict with you you are as a person?” And with that one question my corner became a less tight.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Philippians 4:8

What challenge do you have in your life? What would be different about that challenge if you had a guardian angel, or a doula, whispering with all the confidence in the world, “You can do this”. What if that voice turned into your own.

“God is within her, she will not fall.”

Psalm 46:5

Satan has so many lies. His favorite is, “You’re not good enough”. The bad news for him about having lies being your only strategy is that one day they will come crashing down. All lies come to light in the end. We get to decide when that is for us. We get to decided when we are going to stop listening and start living in who we are called to be.

“You are who you choose to be.”
